PRESS RELEASE
January 25, 2005 at about 6:57
a.m. the Adams County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a hit and run collision
that occurred on Bench Rd between Hwy 24 and Reynolds Rd. When deputies arrived, they determined that
at approximately 6:45am Lester L. Clemons, 89 year old, was walking across
Bench Rd from his residence at 2071 W Bench Rd to get his newspaper. After obtaining his paper, Clemons was struck
by a westbound vehicle that fled the scene. Through investigation, deputies
have determined that the fleeing vehicle is described as 1989-1992 Nissan,
possibly a Maxima or Stanza, maroon or burgundy in color.
After being struck by the Nissan,
another vehicle arrived and found Clemons lying in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle called the
Sheriff’s office to report the collision, and while they were on the scene, a
second vehicle, described as a white van, possibly a mini-type van, struck
Clemons body. After this, the van fled
the scene westbound on Bench Rd.
A short time later a third vehicle
drove through the collision scene and may have struck the body. This third vehicle stopped and the driver
assisted at the scene.
Clemons died at the scene of massive
trauma. Darkness and fog may have played
a factor in the collision. Deputies are
attempting to locate vehicles matching the description of the Nissan. Anyone with information on the Nissan or van,
or who may have been in the area at the time of the collision is asked to
contact the Adams County Sheriff’s Office at 488-2061.
